7 Principles of Google Marketing

A few students at the International College of Management Sydney went on a field trip to Beijing to visit the Google offices and attend an exclusive Google marketing seminar... And from the heart of it all, they were given 7 basic principles used by Google as a part of their macrocosmic web marketing strategy:

1. Results must be trackable - Everything counts and get counted

2. Promote trial - Try product in free and simple way

3. Let others speak for you. - Generate word of mouth

4. Data. Not hype. - Avoid making buzz, numbers speak louder than words, lowest costs per lead. Simple and clean design.

5. You are smart. And your time matters. - Benefit to those who have more experience because they are more convincing

6. We are serious. Except when we are not. - Don’t forget the stand of whimsy in the google DNA

7. Big ideas move us

Microsoft, it's time for you to yield

I've been reading a lot in the news lately regarding Microsoft's new 'top-secret' plan to usurp Google from its pole position of search engine popularity. Google, which has entrenched itself as a government backed powerhouse in Australia boasts an alarming 92% of search engine market-share... And when I say government backed, I mean that it is being pushed by the government to be cemented as the default search engine browser for educational purposes in schools. Normally in Australia, monopolistic companies tend to be frowned upon, but then there's the exception of Google. It's a household name, can easily be censored by educational bodies, and a lot of people seem to be buying in to the hype surrounding it.

Then, there is Microsoft... The company dominates the market share for Operating Systems, boasts a huge proportion of browser market share (in which it makes Google Chrome look like the runt of the litter), and now it wants a slice of the search engine cake... The appetite of the Microsoft giant and its leader of the geeky puniverse, Bill Gates, is insatiable. I'll give them their dues, though, they are fiercly competitive... But in saying that, do they really have to have a stake in everything...? And when they do get that slice of profitable pie, why does the slice have to consist of at least 80% of the market share?

A lot of people have been arguing that Google's dominance in Australia is unfair, and somewhat monopolistic... But to that, I really couldn't give a damn. Why? Because I'm sick of seeing Microsoft's trademark on everything... The Microsoft trademark is like a malignant cancer that just keeps spreading its cells into every market niche. It's about time that Gates laid down his defensive arms. There is no way that they can bring down the Google monster, and as for me, I will continue to happily support Google's search engine dominance globally, and in Australia alone.
